Sno-Isle Libraries offers three levels of internet access, in compliance with CIPA regulations.  The software that we use for filtering is provided by Lightspeed Systems, Inc.  They group websites into categories, which are then blocked depending on the filtering level selected.

Full Access

Individuals age 17 and over are allowed full access to the internet.  The default at log-in is Filtered with Email, and users may opt-in to full access.

Filtered with Email

Individuals under 17 are only allowed this level of access, no matter which computer they sign into. This is also the default filtering level for all users when they sign in.  The following categories are blocked:

  • offensive (sealed)
  • porn
  • porn.illicit (sealed)
  • mature.art
  • mature.bodyart
  • mature.games
  • security.malware
  • security.proxy
  • security.translators
  • violence.extremism (sealed)

Filtered

Computers with a higher level of filtering are provided in the children's area at each library.  Users may also choose this level of filtering on any public computer after they have signed in.  The following categories are blocked:

  • alcohol
  • drugs
  • gambling
  • offensive (sealed)
  • porn
  • porn.illicit (sealed)
  • suspicious
  • violence
  • forums
  • forums.blogs
  • forums.dating
  • forums.email
  • forums.im
  • forums.newsgroups
  • forums.p2p
  • forums.personals
  • forums.social_networking
  • mature
  • mature.art
  • mature.bodyart
  • mature.games
  • mature.language
  • parked
  • security
  • security.malware
  • security.nettools
  • security.proxy
  • security.shorteners
  • security.translators
  • facebook
  • instagram
  • pinterest
  • twitter
  • violence.extremism (sealed)
  • ads
  • shopping.spam
  • spam
  • weapons
  • education.sex
  • expired
  • plagiarism

If a user believes that a website should not be blocked, they can submit the review form provided by the filtering software vendor, who then decides whether to recategorize the website.  Library staff do not track these submissions, so the user should check the site after a few days to see if it has become available.

Websites in the categories marked "sealed" will not be considered for recategorization by the vendor.
